Summer safety!

Updated: Jul 7

What an amazing Fourth of July! We spent the weekend at the lake soaking up the rays of sunshine and watching the vibrant fireworks. So many times as parents we have so many things we are thinking about in our brains at one time. Apply sunscreen (check), life jackets (check), regular diapers, swim diapers, snacks, drinks OH MY! It's easy to overlook a naughtily little 2 year old who somehow Houdinied out of their life jacket or accidently slipped out of sight. It happens so fast.

Little personal story my son was two and we were at the lake jumping off the dock my sweet

boy had to go potty and we took his life jacket off for two seconds so he could pee. In that two seconds he jumped in the water at lake thunderbird...for all of those who don't know this is a red dirt muddy lake. Impossible to be seen after 1-2 ft under. Luckily my husband was in the water and snatched him up like the little ninja he is. I went home that night and before bed I just bawled. As a nurse I've seen babies in ICU from drowning and near drowning. I ugly cried to my husband for I don't know how long. How our lives could have changed so drastically if he wasn't there. What if we wouldn't have been right there... that same night we could have been in ICU with my son who was unresponsive...we could be deciding whether we were going to donate his organs if he didn't pull through. We were lucky that day! And I thank God for opening my eyes! It was a rude awakening that could have been so much worse than it was. It was a little slap in the face. Not for one second will our babies ever be around water without life jackets on.

Did you know drowning is the single leading cause of death in children between 1 and 4! Both of our babies are in that age group and I understand why they are crazy, they are a lot of work, they are easy to look over, but most of all DROWNING IS SILENT. There's no splashing like there is in movies or screaming for help. Parker is currently in swim lessons! ISR or Infant safety rescue is a survival swimming that teaches children how to either float or swim float to the side of the pool until an adult can help get them out! It's life changing. Don't take the chance so many others wish they wouldn't have. For more information about ISR please visit Oklahoma ISR HERE!

I hope you had a wonderful and safe Independence Day!
